At the CES 2024 event, big TV companies like Samsung, LG TCL, and Hisense showed off how their TVs use AI. They are not just talking about making the screen bigger or adding more pixels. They are using AI to make the picture on those screens look even more better.

You might not realize it, but when you watch TV, AI starts working. AI just doing simple things like making the picture less fuzzy and clearer. But also doing really cool stuff like figuring out what in the picture and making it look even better.

LG’s new G4 OLED TV will use a special tech called AI Director Processing. It helps the TV display colors exactly how the director wanted to be in their movies or shows.

Imagine watching your favorite movie on a TV that not only has a great picture but also makes the colors pop and the details stand out. That’s what AI is doing for TVs now. It’s like having a movie theater experience right in your living room.

AI on smart TVs is also used in TVs to make movies and shows with bright colors and dark shadows look even better. It can even improve old show and movies that were not originally made with these fancy colors. This often involves making picture clearer and sharper by looking at lots of other pictures and learning from them.

AI Advancements

In 2024, AI on smart TVs will make TVs even better. LG has introduced a cool feature for its top OLED TVs called AI Direction Processing. It can look at the colors a director wanted for each scene in a movie and make them look even better. This is a big step for LG and we are curious to see how well it works when we try out the 2024 models.

Samsung, known for using AI, came up with an idea for its 2024 8K TVs. Which is called AI Motion Enhancer Pro. This clever tool uses AI to understand what type of ball is being used in different sports. Then, it shows it on the screen with out blurriness. I got to see a demonstration of the in action. And let me tell you, the difference between a ball moving with AI Motion Enhancer Pro and a ball with feature switched off was night and day.

AI in 8K TVs: Enhancing the Picture Quality

Samsung is not only using AI on smart TVs only for balls for its 8K TVs, but for the whole picture. The 2024 8K TVs have new processor named NQ8 AI Gen3. Samsung says this has a special AI engine (called the Neutral Processing Unit) inside that’s much faster and smarter than the one in last year’s 8K TVs.

All of that is to help make picture look better. You see, a 4K TV has about 8.3 million tiny dots on its screen, but an 8K TV has around 33 million dots. Now, most of the stuff we watch on 8K TVs is either 4K or regular HD. So, the TV has to create millions of new dots to fill its super clear screen and make everything look really sharp and clear.

That’s where Samsung’s 8K AI Upscaling Pro comes in. This feature looks at lots of picture dots to figure out how to create all those new dots. And it’s not just about adding dots randomly. Samsung’s TV also uses something called “Quantum Super Resolution” to make sure everything looks smooth and detailed without making it look weird or too much. It’s like having a super-smart artist inside TVs making suer everything looks just right.

AI and 4K TVs: Importance in Today’s Tech World

One of the great things about the top streaming services is that many of them offer movies and shows in super clear 4K resolution with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atoms sound. As long as your home had fast internet and strong Wi-Fi, you could enjoy amazing picture quality and immersive sound.

But now that perks aren’t so easy to get. Big streaming services like Netflix, and Max have introduced new pricing levels where you have to pay for 4k/HDR videos and Dolby Atoms sound. For some people who owns 4K TVs, this change has made those services too expensive. They have chosen to switch to a cheaper plan with just regular HD videos or even a basic plan with ads.

If you are not planning to stop streaming shows and movies and are thinking about getting a top-quality 4K Blu-ray player instead this new thing that’s happened makes the upscaling abilities of 4K TVs even more important.

Brands that use AI on smart TVs to make picture look better have a big advantage here. They use the same tricks to make sure clear 8K pictures as they do to make regular HD ones look good on a 4K TV. But not every TV does this king of upscaling very well, even if they use AI for other picture improvements.

The basic processors in a lot of smart TVs are now really good, thanks to AI, They can do things like recognizing scenes and objects in real-time, making details look better and improving the overall picture quality. That’s why cheap big screen TVs today look much better than ones from a few year ago. But these basic solutions can’t do everything, especially as we start using higher resolution like 8K and even bigger TVs.

Don’t worry about AI in TVs its actually a good thing for picture for picture quality. But not all AU in TVs is the same. As TVs change from just a single screen to massive videos walls, custom-made AI that improve images and make them clear will be really important.
