People eager to get Nvidia’s next-gen RTX 5090 in 2024 should pay attention to what AMD does next year. Nvidia might launch the RTX 5090 based on what AMD does with its own next-gen GPUs.

In a recent video, the tech channel Moore’s Law is Dead discussed when the Nvidia RTX 5090 might come out. The launch in 2024 depends a lot on how competitive AMD’s upcoming RDNA 4 GPUs are, according to a source from Nvidia.

Nvidia may release its new consumer architecture, based on the upcoming Nvidia Backwell GPU, in Q4 2024, influenced by RTX-40 series in 2024, including new RTX Super SKUs in January 2024. Nvidia is also considering how AMD’s next-gen mid-range cards may impact sales.

AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU’s targeting the mid-market, could challenge Nvidia in the high-end market. Nvidia might response by introducing a new top-of-the-line graphics card to rekindle interest in the GeForce line, at least that’s what people are thinking.

Regards of what happens in 2024, PC gamers note that Nvidia plans to showcase the RTX 5000 series at CES 2025, suggesting a possible release of the next-gen GPU by early 2025

The timeline is earlier than initially; early report hinted that Nvidia’s next-gen cards might not arrive until in 2025. Even with this accelerated timeline, the new GPUs are likely a year away at the soonest.

How Much Will Nvidia Focus on Selling Graphics Cards in 2024?

The big question is whether all of this will be important by the end of the 2024.

Nvidia quickly became a trillion-dollar company because of its expertise in AI chips. Even though AMD and Intel are trying to compete in this area, Nvidia’s advantages as the first mover is like having a goose that lays lots of golden eggs.

Unlike Intel, Nvidia doesn’t make its own fabs, which means they can only use a limited amount of silicon. Nvidia might not stick around in the market for consumer graphics cards for much longer.

The profit from AI are just too huge to ignore, and they are much higher than the money Nvidia makes form selling graphic cards to gamers.

It’s not surprising then that,  as mentioned in a profile in The New Yorker, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang emailed the company a few month ago saying, “We are no longer a graphics company.”
